1.Tell me a little about yourself.

I’m a native Iowan and a proud dog mom to a sweet boy named Finley. Growing up in Sioux City exposed me to some wonderful natural resources, including the beauty of the Loess Hills. I’m an avid reader, traveler and bird watcher. I’ve been a member of the Des Moines Audubon chapter for many years. My obsession with our feathered friends went to a whole new level after my sister purchased a Bird Buddy for my Christmas gift last year.

2. What drew you to public relations in the first place?

I was a member of several youth-oriented community leadership groups in high school which led me to believe Public Administration might be the right course of study if I wanted a life of public service. After starting college at the University of Northern Iowa, it was quickly apparent their strong interdisciplinary approach to communication was a better fit for me. When I joined the Public Relations Society of America student association (PRSSA), I had found my tribe and set out on a long career helping to educate and inform the public.

3. What has your career path looked like? What is your current role?

I started my career in non-profit public relations, leading communication efforts for both a community foundation and a regional social service agency. From there, I worked in high-tech public relations for five years. That experience led me to focus on digital marketing at Principal Financial Group for almost two decades, helping people work toward a more secure financial future. In 2017, I transitioned into the leader role for communication at Principal, which included thought capital, media relations and issues management. Today, I serve as the Director of Sustainability and Event Experience for the company, which provides me with the opportunity to guide our sustainability strategy, ESG disclosure reporting and a portfolio of corporate events.

4. How did you get involved with PRSA Iowa?

I joined PRSA right out of college and over the past three decades I’ve served the chapter as program chair, APR chair, chapter president and most recently as Ethics chair. My involvement in the chapter has allowed me to network with practitioners and establish friendships that have sustained throughout my career.

5. What is the best piece of advice you’ve received?

I’ve received so many words of wisdom over my career, but the most impactful piece of advice was to remember we are all doing our best.

6. What do you like to do in your free time?

I enjoy going to concerts, musicals, theaters and gatherings with friends and family. I serve on the board of Hoyt Sherman Place Foundation which allows me to advocate for their fabulous programs. I’m also a big fan of Jester Park, Saylorville Lake and Red Feather Prairie. We are truly lucky to have the trail systems in the metro.
