1.Tell me a little about yourself.
I grew up in Illinois and attended Illinois State University, graduating with a degree in broadcast journalism. Early on, I knew I was willing to move wherever the news would take me, which eventually led me next door to Iowa. I have lived in Iowa ever since. I met my partner just after a year of moving to Iowa. Today, we have two dogs and a son who will turn two in May!
2. What drew you to public relations in the first place?
While working in news, I always knew I would transition to public relations or communications. I have always enjoyed working with media, organizations and the public, and public relations brings all of those elements together in a meaningful way.
3. What has your career path looked like? What is your current role?
I began my career in broadcast journalism, working at TV news stations in Central Illinois, southeast Iowa and Des Moines. After many years working in news, I knew I was ready to enter the PR and communications field. I joined the communications department at Central College where I was able to work on those skills and grow. From there, I moved to Catch Des Moines where I focused more on public relations and worked with local, state, national and international media, as well as the community. Currently, I am a communications advisor at Wixted & Company. I have really enjoyed the diverse work I have done and continue to do.
4. How did you get involved with PRSA Iowa?
I joined PRSA Iowa to connect with others in the industry and get more involved professionally. It has been a great opportunity to learn from peers in the industry and expand my network. After joining PRSA Iowa, I was looking for an opportunity to get more involved in the organization and decided to join the Board. This is my third year serving on the PRSA Iowa Board.
5. What is the best piece of advice you’ve received?
Be comfortable being uncomfortable. This advice applies to all aspects of life. If you continue to be comfortable in the work you do or only say yes to what feels familiar, you may miss opportunities to discover new strengths or passions. Growth and learning often happen when you get outside your comfort zone.
6. What do you like to do in your free time?
In my free time, I enjoy hanging out with my family. During the summer, we like to travel and do Spartan races and spend time outside.
