Tell me a little about yourself.
I say I’m a boomerang Iowan because I’ve moved away and returned to Iowa twice since graduating from Drake. I think Des Moines is a great place to build a career and get involved with the community. I focus my volunteer efforts on LGBTQ+ issues, affordable housing, food insecurity and youth empowerment.John, my partner of nearly 18 years, is a physician.
What drew you to public relations in the first place?
I’ve always had a love for writing and storytelling, so I knew I’d pursue a career based on those talents.
What has your career path looked like? What is your current role?
I joke that my career path is more like a jungle gym than a ladder - and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’ve worked for agencies, not-for-profits, global financial services companies and regional brand leaders. I took a three-year break from PR to do fundraising for United Way, which was incredibly rewarding and has influenced my work in PR ever since. Today, I’m working for myself as a freelance writer and communications consultant.
How did you get involved with PRSA Iowa?
I’m also a boomerang member of PRSA. I joined early in my career along, participating on the awards committee. I left PRSA for a few years when I was living out of state and while I worked for United Way. I rejoined while I was leading communications at Bankers Trust.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve received?
I had two wonderful mentors early in my career who advised me to always be as supportive as possible to others who are new in their roles. They said it’s especially important to help support even high-level leaders and executives when they’ve moved into a new role, because even experienced professionals have much to learn when tackling a new role. I think of that advice every time I’ve hired someone or worked for someone in a new role. In a sense, my mentors were teaching me to be patient and empathetic.
What do you like to do in your free time?
John and I love to travel. I’ve been to 47 states and 5 continents and hope to continue exploring the world. I also enjoy volunteering, going to the gym and working on our house and yard.
