Member Spotlight: Blake Carlson

Tell me a little about yourself.

Bio: Blake Carlson is a 24-year-old originally from Spencer, Iowa, whose friends would like him to learn another song on the harmonica besides "Piano Man." He loves wedding dances, rye whiskey, Brandi Carlile and ranch dressing. Inspired by human connection, Blake enjoys learning from people who are way cooler than him and wishes he looked better in a bolo tie. His favorite word is hootenanny.

What drew you to public relations in the first place?

I’m a first-generation student, so I really had no idea what I was doing when looking at colleges and potential career paths. I was sure of two things: I liked theatre and I was good at talking to people. I declared a major in public relations, which I found out means a bit more than just “talking to people,” and graduated from Simpson College in 2019 with additional minors in arts management and entrepreneurship.

What has your career path looked like? What is your current role?

A cold application to the Principal Financial Group summer internship program led to an extended position in Employee Communications. I worked with a rockstar team that helped me find a niche in the corporate world—a place I never expected to find myself. After graduating, I transitioned to a full-time role on the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Team where I coordinated communications and managed events for the company’s Employee Resource Groups. In December 2021 I joined the team at Des Moines Metro Opera where I currently work as Communications and Engagement Director. In this role I work with the opera’s corporate, foundation and community partners as well as evolving the organization’s communications infrastructure and capabilities. I owe much, however, to my first job at 14 as a busser and host at Cindy’s Steakhouse in Spencer, Iowa. The lessons learned working in the service industry are some of the best—and will stay with me forever.

How did you get involved with PRSA Iowa?

My involvement with PRSA started as a student thanks to the advocacy of my professor, Jane Murphy, as to the benefits of belonging to the organization. After a brief hiatus, I am excited to be back involved and serving on the board also due to the advocacy of mentor, fellow Spencer High School alum and PRSA Iowa Board President, Abby Delaney.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve received?

“Don’t sweat the small stuff. (And it’s all small stuff.)”

What do you like to do in your free time?

I enjoy going to the theatre, concerts and festivals, as well as camping and cycling. I’m also always down for a treasure hunt for thrifted vintage clothes and vinyl LPs. However, most of my free time is spent working on my MBA at Drake University—I’m almost done!
