Tell me a little about yourself.

I'm from Boone, Iowa, so naturally I grew up a diehard Iowa State fan. I attended Simpson College and graduated in 2020 with degrees in public relations and English and a minor in political science. At Simpson I was involved in many things, but I enjoyed nothing more than my participation in PRSSA and our student-run agency, C Street Agency. I was very involved with PRSSA throughout college both locally and nationally. I also led C Street as the firm director for two and a half years.

I'm a Social Media Manager for AKC Marketing located in Johnston, Iowa, where I work on behalf of primarily agriculture industry-specific clients. As my second professional role out of college, I'm thrilled to work in a role I'm not only passionate about but for a company that provides me the opportunity to learn about new aspects of my industry and profession and to grow while doing it.

What drew you to public relations in the first place?

I actually went to college with the plan to pursue law. When I was a little unsure about that decision during my first semester at Simpson, the career development office encouraged me to apply for two different internships -- one in law and one in PR. I was offered both but I knew I would enjoy the work in the public relations position more, so I changed my path. I was drawn to the complexity of the field, I liked the idea that no two days would ever be the same working in PR and that my work-life balance would be better than in law.

What has your career path looked like? What is your current role?

I graduated in May of 2020, which was a scary time to be looking for a job. Luckily I started applying early and secured a position at the West Des Moines Chamber of Commerce as the Events and Marketing Manager. I gained excellent experience in a variety of skills during my two years in that position and greatly enjoyed my time there and everyone I worked with. I decided professionally that I wanted to lean more into marketing and social media which led me to my current role as a Social Media Manager with AKC Marketing. I began there in May and have really enjoyed working at an agency and learning more about social media strategy and SEO.

How did you get involved with PRSA Iowa?

I attended as many PRSA Iowa events as I could while I was still in college. This was a great way to make professional connections I still have to this day. I joined PRSA right after graduation and became the liaison to Simpson's PRSSA Chapter this year. I'm looking forward to continuing this role and becoming Program Chair in 2023.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve received?

"Get comfortable with being uncomfortable."

What do you like to do in your free time?

I'm a big reader and sports fan. So when I'm not cheering on ISU or the LA Dodgers, you can usually find me with a book.
