Resolutions the SMART way

We are only one month away from 2019 and you’re probably thinking, “How is this even possible? We just started 2018!”

It’s no secret that this year has flown by.

And with the end of every year comes new year resolutions — nearly 50 percent of the American population is going to set a goal — personal or professional — for themselves. But, even though a rather high number of people are setting goals, only 8 percent are successful in achieving their resolutions.

Don’t be the 42 percent of people who don’t achieve their goals each year. Make an effort to be thoughtful and create a plan by following these five SMART steps to achieve your 2019 goals and intentions.

  1. Set concrete, clearly defined goals with specific points of success.
  2. Find ways for you to measure your progress.
  3. Aim high, but within reason. Your goals and intentions should be a stretch, but something you can definitely achieve.
  4. Find a goal you’ll be motivated to stick with.
  5. Time-bound. Set a reasonable time frame for achieving your goal and focus on your small wins along the way.

With a month left of 2018, you have plenty of time to write down your specific plan of attack. And, make sure to write it down because you are 44 percent more likely to achieve your goals if they are written down!

On another note, all good things take time — so don’t give up! According to PsychologyToday.com, it takes an average of 66 days to make something a habit. Although this seems like a long time, you may encounter times where you miss a day here and there with your habit change, but that doesn’t mean you have to start over on day one — so don’t get discourage and keep going!
