1. Tell me a little about yourself.

With over 20 years of experience in public relations, I am a seasoned professional who can develop and execute integrated campaigns with measurable results for clients in healthcare, agriculture, and retail. I hold a master's degree in strategic communications, a bachelor's degree in public relations, and an accreditation in public relations (APR). I thrive on issues management and helping brands develop proactive strategic communications plans.

2. What drew you to public relations in the first place?

I always knew that I wanted to work in communications but wasn’t sure what that would look like. When I took my first public relations course at the University of Northern Iowa, I instantly knew that public relations was a career I wanted to pursue. I also had an amazing journalism professor that inspired me to ask the tough questions to better understand the true story. This has been extremely helpful as storytelling is key to public relations.

3. What has your career path looked like? What is your current role?

I have been blessed to be able to grow my career in a variety of industries and settings. I quickly learned that I can be taught the industry and that my skills were easily transferable. In addition, I have had some great leaders along the way who encouraged me to continue to learn, try new things and taught me it’s okay to fail. And that’s how I arrived at my current role where I manage public relations for Mom’s Meals. I love the mission – improving life through better nutrition at home – and making a difference in the lives of the people we serve.

4. How did you get involved with PRSA Iowa?

I was involved in PRSSA at the University of Northern Iowa where I served on the executive board. It was a natural transition for me to join PRSA Iowa when I graduated. However, it wasn’t until I was going through the APR process that I got more involved in the Chapter. I have had the opportunity to serve in a variety of roles, including President. By doing this, I have met so many talented communications professionals both in Iowa and around the US – many of whom I am lucky to call friends.

5. What is the best piece of advice you’ve received?

The best piece of advice I’ve received is: “Don’t be afraid to fail.” It’s a reminder to embrace new challenges and know that sometimes it won’t work out. It’s a valuable learning opportunity that helps me grow both personally and professionally.

6. What do you like to do in your free time?

My husband and I can be found at a cross country meet, football game, basketball game, baseball game, softball game, track meet or dance competition supporting our two active children doing what they enjoy. Beyond that, I try to sneak in time with friends wherever I can and get back to my roots by visiting my parents on their farm to unwind when time allows.
