Tell me a little about yourself.
I’ve lived in Iowa most of my life. I graduated from Drake University in 1995 with a double major in political science and communications. I have lived in Indianola since 1999. My husband and I raised our two children there and remain active in the community.
What drew you to public relations in the first place?
My draw to communications originated from the public affairs side of things. Communicating facts in a way the general public can digest is critical in so many ways.
What has your career path looked like? What is your current role?
I’m the Vice President of Communications & Corporate Relations for Central Iowa Power Cooperative (CIPCO). My communications path has dabbled in marketing, economic development, and government relations. Out of college, I worked for an advertising agency, which led to a position directly with the client. This ultimately set up a 19-year career in state government at the Iowa Department of Economic Development and Iowa Workforce Development. I eventually moved on from the government into the electric utility industry, where I am today. My current department covers internal/external and member communications, media relations, government and regulatory relations, and charitable giving activities.
How did you get involved with PRSA Iowa?
My involvement with PRSA grew organically as I moved deeper into media relations. It’s great to have easily accessible outside resources.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve received?
It’s hard to narrow that down to just one, however, I had a previous leader who said, “Never be afraid to make a decision.” There are times when you’ll have to adjust plans or completely redirect them, but you’ll never know what can be accomplished if you don’t act.
What do you like to do in your free time?
Spend time with family – both of our children are adults now. Volunteer in the community, travel to new places, and take time to enjoy all stages of life.
