Tell me a little about yourself.
I grew up in North Carolina, graduating from East Carolina University (Go Pirates!). After college, I was looking for a job in TV or radio and got offered a gig in St. Joseph, Missouri as the weekend sports anchor/weekday news reporter. I had never even visited the Midwest. The first winter was brutal. That career path eventually led me to the Des Moines area and WOI-TV. I moved here 20+ years ago, so I consider myself a full-fledged Iowan now. Earlier this year, I married my beautiful wife, Laurie. Meeting her is the greatest thing that has ever happened to me. We live in Ankeny.
What drew you to public relations in the first place?
I took a winding career path to get to this point. The common denominator throughout my career is working with the public. I enjoy connecting with people and finding common bonds that bring people together.
What has your career path looked like? What is your current role?
I’m the communications director for the Iowa Pork Producers Association, having served in this role since March 2023. Previously, I was the communications director for the Iowa Secretary of State for eight years. Before that, I spent some time as a political analyst and writer, worked on some presidential and gubernatorial campaigns, and going back many, many moons ago, I was a TV anchor and radio host.
How did you get involved with PRSA Iowa?
I’m still a relative newbie to PRSA Iowa. I joined about 18 months ago after taking the job with the Iowa Pork Producers Association. I’ve found it to be very useful for networking and learning and I hope to be even more involved in PRSA Iowa in the future.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve received?
Live life abundantly.
What do you like to do in your free time?
My wife Laurie and I are foodies. We love dining out, whether it’s a new place or someone we’ve been to several times. Thankfully, central Iowa has an abundance of great restaurants, with lots of terrific pork dishes! We also enjoy traveling, sports, and watching sunsets from our deck.
