Member Spotlight: Courtney Shaw
1. Tell me a little about yourself.
I grew up in Texas and have called Greater Des Moines home for over 12 years. I’ve been in the public relations industry for nearly 20 years and my journey has taken me through various roles that have provided me with great opportunities. I believe in collaboration, positivity and working as a team to deliver impactful results.
2. What drew you to public relations in the first place?
I hadn’t considered a career in public relations until I took my first PR class. I had an awesome professor at Oklahoma State who made learning PR fun and interesting. She inspired me and showed me the power of storytelling.
3. What has your career path looked like? What is your current role?
I’ve been fortunate to work in various industries throughout my career including business, consulting, agency and non-profit. Each role and organization expanded my skillset in numerous ways. I love my job at the Greater Des Moines Partnership as the Chief Communications Officer. I work with an incredibly smart and talented team on so many interesting and engaging projects that support our community.
4. How did you get involved with PRSA Iowa?
When I first moved to Iowa, I didn’t know anyone and was interested in connecting with industry professionals. Discovering PRSA Iowa was a game-changer. Through programming, networking and volunteering, I was able to connect with remarkable professionals and make great friends.
5. What is the best piece of advice you’ve received?
My father always told me that we have two ears and one mouth for a reason. His advice was to listen and really hear what others are saying before speaking. This helps guide me to be a thoughtful communicator.
6. What do you like to do in your free time?
My husband, Bret, and I have three boys who love playing sports. We are usually watching games on the basketball court, baseball field or cross-country track. I also enjoy exercising, reading, traveling and quilting.
