1. Tell me a little about yourself.

I am the Communications Manager at Ruan Transportation Management Systems, a family-owned third-party logistics company here in Des Moines. I am a native of Ottumwa, Iowa, and a graduate of the University of Iowa. Go Hawks!

2. What drew you to public relations in the first place?

I grew up in a “newspaper house” – both of my parents worked at our local newspaper, so I developed a deep appreciation for news and storytelling from a young age. Writing has always been a passion of mine, and when I started college, I initially pursued a path toward becoming a sideline reporter. Over time, I realized that lifestyle wasn’t the right fit, and I began to focus more intentionally on writing. During college, I was actively involved in various clubs and my sorority, which sparked a strong interest in community engagement. The combination of those two passions, writing and community involvement, naturally led me to public relations and laid the foundation for where I am now.

3. What has your career path looked like? What is your current role?

My career path has been a bit unconventional. By chance, I took an HR internship during college, which led to the first five years of my professional career in human resources at Ruan. That time was incredibly formative - it taught me the importance of empathy, how to navigate tough conversations, and how to grow as a leader. In 2024, the Communications Manager role opened up at Ruan, and thanks to the encouragement of supportive leaders and a company that truly believes in its people, I stepped into the role. I haven’t looked back since!

4. How did you get involved with PRSA Iowa?

When I stepped into this role, I knew I needed to refresh my public relations knowledge after spending a few years in a different field. I remembered my involvement with the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) and decided to reconnect with the professional side of the organization. Joining PRSA Iowa felt like a natural next step – it has helped me sharpen my skills and expand my network within the PR community.

5. What is the best piece of advice you’ve received?

As a words person, I have always been drawn to quotes. One that has stuck with me is: “If you are the smartest person in the room, you are in the wrong room.” This quote resonated with me early in my career, especially as a young woman navigating a male-dominated industry. It still reminds me that feeling out of place or intimidated is not a weakness; it is a sign of growth. I am fortunate to work alongside experienced, insightful leaders in both my role and the organizations I am part of outside of work. I do not want to spend that time worrying about how I am perceived; I want to spend that time contributing what I can and learning from those around me. Real growth happens when you are a bit uncomfortable.

6. What do you like to do in your free time?

I enjoy staying active with my husband and our yellow lab, Koda, whether that’s playing in adult rec sport leagues or exploring the outdoors. I also recently began coaching club volleyball, which has been a fun and fulfilling challenge. Additionally, I serve as the Communications Chair for the Junior League of Des Moines. Staying engaged and giving back to my community is something that energizes me.
