New Guidance from PRSA National on Misinformation

PRSA National recently released “Tackling Information: The Communications Industry Unites,” which is a guidebook that provides data, analysis, and insights from more than two dozen senior-level PR professionals on the issue of misinformation in the media. This is an important step towards unifying public relations professionals around this growing problem and providing guidance on how to combat misinformation, disinformation and malinformation.

As PR professionals we must be vigilant and take the necessary steps to ensure accuracy always. In an era where information constantly flows, distinguishing truth from fiction has become more challenging than ever. However, there are steps we can take each day to promote accuracy and responsibility in our profession:

  1. Verify, verify, verify: Before you hit share on your social changes, ensure that what you are promoting is accurate or comes from a very reliable source. Remember, even media outlets sometimes publish inaccurate information.

  2. Be media savvy: Learn to recognize tactics that are sometimes employed such as cherry-picking data, using emotional language or employing misleading imagery.

  3. Promote fact-checking: Encourage the use of fact-checking websites and tools to verify the accuracy of information.

  4. Lead by example: Educate colleagues on public relations best practices. We can set an example by prioritizing accuracy, integrity, and transparency in our own communication.

By demonstrating a commitment to truth and ethical conduct, we can inspire others to stem the flow of misinformation. To learn more and download the free guidebook, visit https://www.prsa.org/article/prsa-provides-thought-leadership-on-growing-misinformation-crisis
